cute,
This is a quick (766 locations) funny read. It’s about a couple of great characters who are small time, bumbling crooks. The zombies only make a brief appearance; the story is more about the characters. Who are very entertaining! A well written and edited short story that you can read on a lunch hour.

|More Clever than Meets the Eye,
“The Heist” is a story about a couple of country bumpkins, Trevor and Jake, running away from the law. They skip town the night before they are arrested. The cops don’t go after them right away because “it’s bowling night.” They find a seemingly abandoned town that conspiracy theorist Trevor heard about from the aluminum foil hat wearing audience of his favorite radio program. It turns out the conspiracy theorists are right, because the town is full of zombies and soldiers.
There is not much that is interesting in the story. We’ve read and seen it all before in hundreds of terrible movies and stories. The atmosphere setting. The dimwitted (and loveable) criminals surviving by the skin of their teeth via deus ex machina devices (Trevor’s uncle’s miraculous return at the end, for example). The equally generic soldiers and town they are trying to protect.
But that is the whole point! It’s a parody. It says so, even in the description.
There are jokes aplenty, from physical and verbal slapstick to philosophy. That’s right, philosophy. David Chalmers is a zombie! Get it?
In addition to being funny, the story brings up a lot of issues worthy of discussion. This includes consumerism, greed, morality, corruption, class, and social control. The last one figures more prominently than the others. Just where do the government scientists place their equipment to control the zombies? And what happens when they move their equipment from one place to another?
“The Heist” reads like a bad B movie, but that’s the point. It keeps you amused and provides food for thought. It is definitely worth the price, and, more importantly, the time.

|Short horror,
This horror short is interesting enough and a quick read. You are left with more questions than answers at the end of it. It features two teenagers without a lot going for them who decide to take advantage of an abandoned town that has been fenced off by the government. But they forget to ask themselves why would the government do that?
